FMVSS 106 Brake Hose Testing

Mechanical

FMVSS

Hoses, Metals, Plastics, Rubber

The (U.S.A) Department of Transport's specification for Brake hoses, formally known as the code of federal regulations title 49 section 571.106. The Hydraulic hose portion of the specification is based on SAE J1401
Hydraulic brake hoses are put through their paces to meet the needs of the FMVSS 106, 40 hoses are destroyed in this program:
Constriction – Verifying the hoses have no narrowings or bottle necks that may reduce flow
Volumetric expansion – Measuring the amount of swell in the hoses under high pressure (all hoses swell, it is just  question of how much)
Burst strength – Hoses are pressurised to the point they burst
Brake fluid compatibility – Hoses are filled with brake fluid and heated to 120°C for three days, followed by constriction and burst tests
The infamous whip test – Hoses are pressurised and spun off centre at 800 rpm for 35 hours
Tensile Test – Hoses are pulled apart and the forces measured
Cold bend – Hoses are cooled to -45°C for three days and bent round a narrow shaft and scrutinised for any damage
O-zone – Hoses are subjected to a high concentration of o-zone and again scrutinised.
Salt spray – High doses of salty water are sprayed over the hoses and corrosion assessed.
Water absorption – Hoses are immersed in 85°C water for 3 days and then subjected to the above tensile, burst and whip tests.
Hot impulse – Hoses are filled with brake fluid and heated to 146°C, they are then assaulted with pressure cycles from atmospheric to 1600 PSI 150 times, followed by a burst test.

Reviews From Our Happy Clients
The testing that 4ward carried out was of a high standard, met deadlines and targets that were necessary and we were kept involved with regular updates as the testing progressed. The support and guidance that 4ward offered to us as an individual company and via their input to BASA was greatly received and helped the industry increase it’s knowledge of what is still a confusing issue. I'm sure that that the issue of CE Marking will continue to evolve and encompass more products, but it is our intention to continue to use 4ward for our CE Marking requirements whether for new product...
